Viruses have been around for a long time, and these computer nuisances show no signs of going away anytime soon. The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that online crime increased 33 per cent in 2008. This year may grow even more, as it started with a bang with the emergence of the Conficker C worm.

In order to protect yourself against cybercriminals, it is vital to install anti-virus software. But what should you be looking for when trying to select the best product?

Here are some hints:

  1. Versatility. A decade ago, viruses were what struck fear in the hearts if information technology professionals. Now there is a wide variety of malicious code that is looking to harm your machine, take it over or steal your personal information. You need to be protected from viruses, spyware, malware, adware, keyloggers, Trojans and other malware. It is best to find a product that is strong against viruses, but can also scan deeply and eradicate other types of malware.
  2. Real-time blocking. Some innovative programs detect malware that is attempting to download onto your PC without your permission. They warn you about this activity and then give you options on how to proceed. This means that threats are stopped before they can even get onto your system.
  3. Schedule scanning. A busy lifestyle leaves little time to think about PC protection. Software that lets you schedule scans is a great convenience.
  4. Frequent, automatic database updates. You want to be sure that your anti-virus vendor is doing everything it can to keep up with the latest threats. Regular database updates will keep you protected.
  5. Blocking of websites. Some programs will block known malware-infected websites. This is just another way they keep you safe.
  6. Removal of rootkits. Rootkits attempt to hide the presence of malware. It is very important that your software can find and rid your machine of these.
  7. Detection of malware in scripts and compressed files. Malware writers are always looking for different ways to infect your PC. It is common for them to try to hide malicious code in scripts and compressed files.

There are many anti-virus products on the market. The key is to find one that offers you easy-to-use, all-around protection.
