The ads may come in several forms that may include pop-ups, promotional banners, links integrated in search results and pop-unders. The Memory Watcher application may download and install other programs on the infected computer. These programs may include rootkit tools. The Memory Watcher application may also allow remote influence in the computer.
The Memory Watcher application may be manually downloaded from its website. The application's website is http://www.memorywatcher.com. The Memory Watcher application's website offers the application as a monitoring device for the computer's memory usage. The website also says that the Memory Watcher application displays a meter for the remaining free memory in the user's computer. The terms of service of the application may also be included in its website but is hard to find. It states that by installing the Memory Watcher application, the user is also agreeing in installing advertising applications.
These ads may be launched every time the user connects to the Internet. It also said that the Memory Watcher application might update itself without the user's consent. The terms of service also say that by using the Memory Watcher application, the user's computer may be exposed to computer viruses, files with illicit codes, eavesdropping, harassment, hacking, electronic trespassing, as well as other harmful consequences or acts that may possibly lead to loss of data, unauthorized invasion of privacy, and other damages.
The Memory Watcher application may also download rootkit tools. Rootkit tools are said to hide the Memory Watcher application from being terminated. It may also disable other programs, such as firewalls and system security programs that may prevent the ads from being displayed.
The Memory Watcher application is also known to run in Windows 95, Windows98 and Windows ME. The application takes up at least 1093Kb of system memory space. The first known detection of the application was in July of 2004.
