Pareto's Perks

It's summer! That means more time to hit the road, the beach or the ball diamond. You'll want to capture memories on your digital camera or video camera: if the devices are new, you should make sure you are not disappointed when you return home. Some of these might not work at their best when connected to your computer.

Hardware devices communicate with your software and Windows operating system through device drivers, and vice versa. Device drivers translate high level, generic commands from software, such as "Print," into low level, device-specific instructions your hardware can understand. If the right drivers are not present, the communication can be poor or non-existent, thus causing problems.

Finding the correct device drivers for all of your hardware can be a challenging and time consuming task. ParetoLogic DriverCure makes it easy. With devices plugged in, this easy-to-use program scans your computer to see which device drivers you require. As well as helping you download the ones you don't have, it will check to make sure you have the latest version of the other necessary drivers.

Updating your drivers on a regular basis is a good idea. It can improve your computer and hardware stability as well as giving you access to additional features, security patches and bug fixes issued by the hardware manufacturer.

One of the best aspects of ParetoLogic DriverCure is its ease of use. It guides you through the process with clear prompts and well-labelled buttons. As well, it has handy features like an Ignore list, a History tab and a scheduler. They all make managing your device drivers much easier.

If you would like to learn more about this driver update software, please click on the ParetoLogic DriverCure links above. Or, to find out about the other products in ParetoLogic's stable of PC protection and optimization products.

Internet Security

Tip of the Month

Phishing attacks can hurt your bank account and credit scores. Avoid these by being wary of unsolicited email offers. As well, try to avoid clicking on links in emails. Instead, you should navigate to the site yourself or call the institution that is supposedly asking for information.

Questions & Answers

Q. A friend of mine said his computer was infected by a rootkit. What on earth is this?

Signed: "Curious"

A. Dear Curious:

A rootkit is a kind of malware that tries to gain administrative control over a computer without being detected. Rootkits can do damage on their own by changing how the operating system, including Windows, works. As well, rootkits can be utilized by cybercriminals in concert with other malware. Rootkits can be used to attempt to cover up the tracks of other kinds of malware. As rootkits bury themselves deep into your computer, traditionally they can be hard to detect and remove. However, ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS utilizes advanced techniques to find and oust these stealth invaders.

ParetoLogic would love to hear from you! Please submit your questions or comments to: newsletter@paretologic.com

Tips And Tricks
Tips and Tricks

What is Tips and Tricks?

Ever wonder what a ParetoLogic product feature does? Looking for tricks to make your computing life easier? You've come to the right place! Each month we will report on a tip, trick or maybe just something cool associated with a featured ParetoLogic product.

ParetoLogic DriverCure Schedule

Hardware vendors release new drivers on a regular basis. These new drivers often fix bugs or patch security vulnerabilities. As well, they can improve performance and stability or even offer access to new features. It is a good idea to check on a regular basis for new driver releases. The easiest way to do this is by setting up a weekly scan with ParetoLogic DriverCure's Schedule feature. For example, you could set it up to scan every Wednesday afternoon. It is a good idea to pick a time that your computer is usually turned on. To set up a regular scan, simply:

  1. At the Home Screen, click on Schedule.
  2. Click New... and a box will pop up.
  3. Then set the Start time (the first box is the hour and the second one is for minutes).
  4. Decide if you would like ParetoLogic DriverCure to start downloading all of the updates or if you prefer to manually decide which ones you want. Click the checkbox so that it reflects your choice.
  5. Click OK.

NOTE: By default, ParetoLogic DriverCure is set to scan in the early morning hours twice a week. You might want to remove or alter these schedules. To remove them, once in the Schedule tab, simply click on the one you want to get rid of and then select Delete. To change the scheduled scan times, click on the one you want to alter, then press Edit... and set a new time as explained above.

Geek Speak

Does it all sound Greek to you?

Don't fear! Each month we explain a word or phrase connected to computers. As well as giving you a better understanding of PCs, you will also be able to astound people with your newfound knowledge.

Storage Device

Computer storage devices are any kind of hardware that stores data. These can include hard drives, flash drives, USB drives and similar items as well as iPods, MP3 players. Even old floppy disks and CDs can be considered to be storage devices.

Input Device

Basically, input devices are any hardware that send information to your computer. There are many different types, including keyboards, mice, scanners, microphone, web cams and digital cameras.

At times, problems can happen with your storage devices resulting in files being accidentally deleted. ParetoLogic Data Recovery Pro has the ability to recover deleted files from a wide variety of storage devices, as well as your home or work computer. In order for your input devices to function with your Windows operating system and software, you need the correct device drivers installed. These allow the software and hardware to communicate. ParetoLogic DriverCure is an innovative tool to ensure you always have the latest drivers you need.
