Pareto's Perks

It's a common problem: a file that can't be opened. A friend sends you a file, and you are not exactly sure what it is so you double-click to open it. It doesn't open so you start trying various programs to try to crack that nut. Or maybe you try to research what kind of file it is by using the file extension (the suffix that appears after the filename). But time ticks by and you get no closer to opening the file.

In today's computer age where files are sent around constantly, this is a typical problem. ParetoLogic now has a unique solution. The innovative company has responded once again to users' needs and has introduced FileCure.

Usually the problem is that the necessary software is not installed, or the wrong program is associated with the file type. FileCure's advanced technology will scan your computer to let you know what file format your files are, and which software can open them. If you do not have the required program to open the file, FileCure will set you up to download safe software that fits your needs. FileCure really takes the hassle out of dealing with mystery files.

As well, FileCure also puts some important, easy-to-use tools in your hands. For example, sometimes when you double-click on a file it does not open even if you have the right program installed. FileCure has a Manage feature that lets you change what are called file associations. You can ensure that Adobe Photoshop is used for all your file extension JPG files. Plus, FileCure has a handy Monitor tool. It keeps an eye on your file associations and lets you know if a program is trying to change them. FileCure actively helps you stop file extension problems.

With FileCure, you also get peace of mind with a professional software support crew. Our team is always looking to make this great program even better. You will benefit with free product and database updates. This service ensures you will be ready for any emerging file extensions. As well, the Customer Care and Support Team is here to answer any questions you have. This group is dedicated to your satisfaction.

Internet Security

Tip of the Month

If you are concerned about Internet advertising, consider an add-on to block these, such as Adblock Plus for Mozilla Firefox. This way you can actually see the content of the web pages you want to visit instead of having unwanted ads popping up everywhere.

Questions & Answers

Q. I have just upgraded to the new Windows 7 operating system. I like it so far, but some of my hardware does not work. Do you happen to know why?

Signed: "No Printer"

A. Dear "No Printer"
Often the problem with hardware that does not work is the device driver. These are small software programs that act as translators between the hardware (such as your printer, scanner or even video display), software and operating system. If an acceptable driver is not installed, your hardware might not work at its best or even at all. Drivers are often specific to certain operating systems and hardware devices.

ParetoLogic's DriverCure lets you update the drivers for your new operating system the easy way. With all of your devices plugged in, it will scan your system to see which devices you need. DriverCure then will refer to an ever-growing database to make sure you have the latest drivers, which ensures your hardware will operate at its best. As well, when new drivers are available, DriverCure will alert you with an email. It couldn't be easier to update your drivers.

ParetoLogic would love to hear from you! Please submit your questions or comments to: newsletter@paretologic.com

FileCure solves headaches of file extensions, associations

ParetoLogic has just the thing for the file extension and association problems that cause headaches and prevent you from opening your files. The company, well-established as a leader in online security and PC optimization, has launched FileCure. This innovative yet user-friendly program solves the ongoing problem of "how do I open this file?"

"We all get those 'mystery' files, documents with strange file extensions or have not been able to open a file. These problems are frustrating and can take a lot of time and effort to solve," said Norm Eldridge, ParetoLogic's Technical Product Manager. "However, with FileCure, we at ParetoLogic have created an easy-to-use solution to these problems. FileCure can help you fix file extension errors and find the right software to open files. It is jam packed with a variety of features to make managing files and monitoring file extensions a whole lot easier."

File extensions should help you figure what type of file you are trying to open. A file extension is the suffix, usually three (.doc, .mp3, .exe) or four (.docx) letters long, that appears after the file name. They identify what the file type is. However, there are many extensions and you likely don't know them all. Also, at times the file extensions may be missing or hidden.

FileCure can help. It uses advanced technology to scan your files, then, in an easy to understand display, tells you what format they are in and which programs can open it. If you not have the appropriate program to crack open a file, FileCure can link you to the online software you need.

Universal translators are coming ... slowly

It has often been said that computers and the Internet are making a global village. Of course, it doesn't make much of a difference if you can't talk to your neighbors.

"To become a smarter planet, the world needs a shared vocabulary for collaboration – particularly the business community," said David Lubensky, an IBM researcher who is managing that company's universal text translator project, n.Fluent.

In the science fiction series "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams, a leech-like creature called a Babel fish was used for instantaneous translation. However, by opening the doors of communication, the Babel fish indirectly led to conflicts and wars. This is something the minds working on both universal speech and text translators certainly hope to avoid. When dealing with language things get well ... complicated.

"Translation is a human linguistic and cognitive task that involves understanding ideas and aligning sentences in context," Dr. Graeme Hirst, a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto, was quoted as saying in a Nov. 24 Globetechnology.com article.

Geek Speak
Geek Speak

Does it all sound Greek to you?

Don't worry! Each month we will explain a word or phrase connected to computers. As well as giving you a better understanding of PCs, you will also be able to astound people with your newfound knowledge.

Unfriend means to take someone off your friend list on social networking sites, such as Facebook, LiveJournal and MySpace. While "unfriend" showed up in the online Urban Dictionary in 2004, it has definitely gained popularity over the past few years. It was recently selected as the 2009 Word of the Year by the Oxford University Press.

Trojans pose as useful programs but actually are spyware, adware or other malware. While they might take their name from the Trojan horse of mythology, they definitely harness the latest technology. For example, the URLzone Trojan horse and Zeus (also known as Zbot or Prg Banking Trojan) have reportedly been used to steal bank account information or send spam. One of the latest scams to get computer users to download Zeus was an email asking people who want to be vaccinated for swine flu to download a vaccination profile archive by clicking on a link. Of course, the link installs the Trojan horse. This summer, one PC security report stated that Trojans accounted for 83 per cent of the malware detected.

ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS offers proven protection against Trojans, keyloggers, spyware, viruses and other malware. If you are concerned about your children's activities on social networking sites, please check out the free, parental controls software, PGsurfer.

Team Player - Maria is Team Germany Soccer fan

Maria Schmidt enjoys the ever-changing nature of her position with ParetoLogic's outstanding Customer Care and Support Team. This exemplary customer service representative likes how she is constantly learning new things at work.

When asked about the one word she would use to describe ParetoLogic, Maria said "friendly." Not surprisingly, this is also the word many use when speaking about the Team Germany soccer fan. She is entrusted to help train new staff members and succeeds with her openness to questions, willingness to help and expertise. Customer Support Team Manager Stephanie Stockton said Maria coaches new team members not only on the technical aspects of the job but also on how to interact with customers on a personal level.

"Maria brings a lot to ParetoLogic: her experience, intelligence, logic skills and empathy have placed her on many project teams and won many friends among the staff and fans among the customers," Stephanie said. "She has a professional attitude and a desire to improve not only herself but the department as a whole, and it shows in her interactions with others."

Maria plays the question game:

Song you never tire of: "Hold On" by Tom Waits

Movie you would strongly recommend to everyone: "Traitor" or "Up"

Book you want to read again: "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig

Where she plays

When not working, Maria enjoys adventuring, doing the New York Times crossword puzzles and working on art projects. Online, she likes to checkout igoogle.com and ncix.com. In the event something goes missing on her computer, Maria trusts ParetoLogic Data Recovery Pro. Take a look at Maria's Internet Safety Tip of the Month on the sidebar to the left.
