While Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts did not do a "My Best Friend's Wedding" sequel in 2010, the pair once again garnered attention together – at least online.
A late August report proclaimed Diaz, star of movies such as "Mask" and "There's Something About Mary," was the most dangerous celebrity on the web. Including the blonde beauty's name in a search causes a one-in-10 chance of ending up at a website that spreads malware. Searches for "Cameron Diaz and screensavers" doubles the risks. "Pretty Woman" star Julia Roberta placed second on the list, while 2009's most dangerous celebrity Jessica Biel was No. 3.
Cyber criminals and malware authors utilize celebrity names to spread malware for a simple reason: they know that's what you will be searching for. Security analyst Jean Taggart, a member of ParetoLogic's Spyware Analysis Team (SWAT), said the celebrity names are being used as a lure.
To protect yourself against attacks such as these, it is important to be careful about what you are searching for and where you click. Software such as ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS removes malware from your PC, prevents you from going to known malicious websites and blocks potentially dangerous files from downloading to your PC.
Rick Forchuk reviews movies and is a regular guest discussing TV and films on Canadian radio stations, including CFAX in Victoria, B.C., where ParetoLogic is proudly located. The veteran entertainment industry watcher said several members of the most dangerous celebrity list enjoyed renewed popularity in 2010. This includes Diaz, whose surge is likely tied to No. 8 on the list – Tom Cruise, Forchuk said. Neither was in the top 10 in 2009.
"When Diaz hooked up with Tom Cruise this year in the movie 'Knight and Day,' their first pairing since 2001's 'Vanilla Sky,' she had a renewed surge of interest, mostly I think, because of Cruise," Forchuk wrote in an email interview. "His career-killing moments over the past few years, including Scientology advice to Brooke Shields about post-partum depression, and his famous jumping-on-Oprah's-couch episode, have us all waiting to see if he'll stumble again and fall even deeper. Cruise's performance in 'Knight and Day' was uneven, as was that of Diaz... but it was all about the pairing and the chemistry."
The critic also sees Cruise linked to Nicole Kidman, who placed seventh on the list. She was tied with "Ghost Whisperer" TV series star Jennifer Love Hewitt.
"Kidman has acted in a rational and adult manner, while Cruise, as noted above, has been something less... the public loves heroes and villains, and the nicer Kidman remains, the more bizarre Cruise appears to be."
Forchuk links Roberts' popularity to her returning to the big screen. She took time off to concentrate on her three young children and husband, Danny Moder.
"When she hit the big screen again in 'Eat Pray Love,' everyone wanted to know if she still had the touch, the magic touch that started with 'Pretty Woman,' and has seen her move through such diverse characters as Erin Brockovitch and 'The Runaway Bride.' Although 'Eat Pray Love' has been a modest box office hit, Roberts' reviews have been outstanding, and that just adds to the interest generated."
Over the three years the dangerous celebrities on the web list have been produced, Brad Pitt has been a constant. He topped the list in 2008, was 10th in 2009 and placed fifth this year. Forchuk believes Pitt appeals to audiences in a few different ways.
"Brad Pitt captures the imagination of the public because he is such a rugged, masculine character, who, at the same time, took six months off from movie-making to look after six children while his partner Angelina Jolie made her action-adventure thriller 'Salt.'"
Interestingly, Jolie and Pitt's former wife, "Friends" star Jennifer Aniston, fell off the list. Jolie was tied for eighth in 2009 with Megan Fox (who also is missing in 2010), while Aniston was third. Beyonce fell from No. 2 to out of the top 10. NFL quarterback Tom Brady (fourth in 2009) and actress/singers Jessica Simpson (fifth), Miley Cyrus (seventh), and Ashley Tisdale (ninth) all dropped off the list.
Forchuk had some thoughts on the actress ranked 10th, list newcomer Anna Paquin. He pointed out how she is a main character on the edgy and very popular "True Blood" TV series.
"(She) has been able to use that notoriety as a vehicle to further her TV Q by announcing her bisexuality, which, although not vampirism, captures the public's attention because it's still perceived as being naughty and not nice," Forchuk wrote.
