3rd Story

Canuck web surfers curious about Cruise, pot

When surfing the Internet, Canadians seem to have a soft spot for searching for a certain short Hollywood leading man and marijuana.

According to an Oct. 18, Sydney Morning Herald story, Google Trends reports "Tom Cruise" is searched for in Canada more often than any other country in the world. The United States and Australia round out the top three countries looking for the scoop on the movie star of such films as Top Gun and the Mission Impossible series. Those three countries, in the same order, are also the most interested in finding out more about pot.

Google Trends records statistics of all Google searches dating back to 2004. It can display the searches by country and city.

For example, Viagra is most often searched for by Italians living in Augusta and Milan. Third on the list of Viagra searchers are London, England dwellers, according to an Oct. 18, 2007 New York Post story.

ParetoLogic is proud to be located in Victoria, B.C., Canada. It is perhaps not surprising that Victorians and Canadians search for the company the most, according to a ParetoLogic Google Trends query conducted in late October. After its hometown crowd, ParetoLogic is used as a search term the most by Australians and United Kingdom residents, especially those living in London.

As for Canadian culture, it is not a shock that Canadians search for the NHL and the National Hockey League more than any other nation. United States sports fans are the second most likely searchers to type in "National Hockey League," while Slovakia and Finland round out the top three for an NHL search.

In their typical rivalry, hockey fans in Edmonton and Calgary are neck-in-neck for searching the most for NHL. Ottawa is third on the list, according to Google Trends. Maybe a little surprising is that the next three top cities searching for that term do not even have teams: Halifax, Winnipeg and Victoria.

Apparently Edmonton fans do not like to spell out NHL. Calgarians search the most for the National Hockey League with Ottawa, Halifax and Winnipeg coming before Edmonton in the top five.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald story, other top searchers for other keywords are:

Hangover - Ireland, United Kingdom, United States;
Burrito - United States, Argentina, Canada;
Britney Spears - Mexico, Venezuela, Canada;
David Beckham - Venezuela, United Kingdom, Mexico;
Sex - Egypt, India, Turkey;
Love - Philippines, Australia, United States;
Botox - Australia, United States, United Kingdom
