ParetoLogic takes it in the arm for Partners for Life

When ParetoLogic customer service representative Tracy Clayton went to give blood one day, she found herself inspired.

Clayton noticed the wall of her local Canadian Blood Services branch featured its Partners for Life. These companies, organizations, schools, community groups and agencies all committed to donate blood, platelets and plasma. Clayton remembers that her first thought was "Oh, ParetoLogic can do that!"

"You save three lives with each donation and, with the number of employees we have, that's a lot," Clayton said of ParetoLogic, which employs more than 120 professionals in a variety of departments. "Also it is a way to give back to the community."

With Clayton leading the way, ParetoLogic embraced its role as a Partner for Life. In less than a month, the PC optimization and online security company surpassed its initial commitment of 15 units.

ParetoLogic CEO and co-founder Elton Pereira believes the Victoria, B.C. company can do even better – and has thrown out a challenge. If 50 or more Pareto team members donate blood, Pereira pledged to shave his head. If over 100 people take a seat in the donation chairs, he will shave his legs.

"In our business we focus a great deal on how to help and protect people," Pereira said. "In our efforts as a Partner for Life we are pursuing these same ideals but in a different way. It's a great feeling for us to help those that urgently need it."

As well as the challenge of the ParetoLogic boss, another effort is spurring employees to donate. A friendly competition between ParetoLogic's two Victoria offices will see bragging rights and cake go to the winner.

While the company treats being a Partner for Life with a sense of fun, donating blood is serious business. Donated blood is desperately needed to treat traumas, for cancer treatment and in a variety of surgeries, including organ transplants. According to the Canadian Blood Services website, about every minute a person in Canada needs blood. As well, 52 per cent of polled Canadians said that they or a family member required blood at one time.

Typically, blood donors in Canada need to be at least 17 years old, in general good health, and weigh at least 50 kilograms (110 pounds). There are also hemoglobin (iron) requirements that must be met, and tests for these are done at the clinic. On the day of your donation, you need to be feeling well, have eaten and had adequate sleep. There are also prescribed waiting period if you have had such procedures as a root canal (72 hours) or a body piercing or tattoo (six months).

ParetoLogic is no stranger to taking an active role in charities and activities to help others. In December the company's Technical Support Team donated software to the Thailand-based Christian Care Foundation for Children with Disabilities (CCD). As well, ParetoLogic was part of the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program for the third consecutive year and collected items for the Mustard Seed food bank. These and the company's ongoing support of World Vision are just some of the way ParetoLogic lends a helping hand.
