ParetoLogic show big heart for Big Bike

ParetoLogic show big heart for Big Bike

ParetoLogic's Diana Nguyen decided to help pedal the Heart and Stroke's Big Bike for many reasons.

"I participated in the Big Bike Ride to help raise money in the memory of my grandma, my aunt and my uncle, who just survived a stroke," the accounting specialist said.

Her story is just an example of how heart disease and stroke touches the lives of many people. That is why it didn't take too long for ParetoLogic to put together a 29-person team to raise money and propel the 30-passenger, including a supplied driver, one-ton big bike.

ParetoLogic far surpassed its expectations by raising $10,000 for the crucial research and education projects the Heart and Stroke Foundation supports. Its fundraising earned the company the prestigious Golden Gears award as the top fundraiser in the Victoria region, which in total raised almost $100,000. The company originally set a goal of $5,000 and had raised $3,600 last year.

"We are very pleased with the amount of money we were able to raise for this important cause," said Elton Pereira, ParetoLogic's Co-Founder, President and CEO. "To be able to raise almost double our goal is outstanding! Personally, I am very pleased with the effort and enthusiasm the ParetoLogic team put into this. Heart disease and strokes touch many of our lives and it is a pleasure to be able to play a role in raising awareness and helping fund invaluable research."

ParetoLogic's fundraising success was a true team effort. Eight members of the team raised more than $200 each, including Nguyen ($900). Pereira topped the region's individual fundraisers with almost $3,500. His brother Adrian, ParetoLogic's Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, was third in the area with almost $3,000. ParetoLogic, as a company, matched donations by staff members to create the overall total. The ParetoLogic team was co-captained by Elton Pereira and by office manager Marlee Wilson, who plays a key role in many of the company's charitable efforts.

As well as money, the annual Big Bike Ride raises extremely important awareness about heart disease and stroke. It was impossible to not see the enthusiastic team – including a large, purple paper-mache costumed passenger – shouting, wielding noisemakers, wearing plastic flowers and pedaling a big bike. The Big Bike team received a Sprit Award for their enthusiasm on the day they rode. ParetoLogic hopes their efforts, and that of other teams, prompts people to think more about heart disease and stroke.

According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, there has been a 70 per cent reduction in mortality due to heart disease and stroke since 1972. However, the two are still responsible for one in three deaths in Canada. Educational material from the foundation states that lifestyle choices alone can prevent more than 80 per cent of heart disease and stroke.

Some of the risk factors that an individual can control include: being overweight, excessive alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, physical inactivity, smoking and stress. Other factors include family history, age, gender, ethnicity and having had a previous stroke.
