Facebook was the most searched for term in 2010, according to Experian Hitwise, a leading online intelligence service. It is the second year the social networking website topped the list. In fact, the 10 most searched terms included three more variations of the popular site: facebook login (No. 2), facebook.com (No. 6) and www.facebook.com (No.9). These terms accounted for 3.48 per cent of all searches overall.
Online people want to connect
Other than social networking (MySpace at No. 5) and videos (YouTube at No. 3), it seems like people were looking for deals online in 2010. Craigslist placed fourth with eBay being ranked seventh. The rest of the top 10 included Yahoo at No. 9 and MapQuest was 10th.
It is interesting to note that people are searching for sites that they could just type into their browser. For example, why search for www.facebook.com when you can just type that URL and hit "enter"?
Chatroulette attracted online attention in 2010. It was the fastest rising search globally last year, according to Google's annual Zeitgeist, which shows the most searched for terms on that engine. The website connects people – via webcams – at random to other users. The iPad was also a wanted item – on and off line – in 2010. It placed second on Google's list.
People were also looking for information about the hottest musicians. Canadian teen singing sensation Justin Bieber placed third on Google's list with hip hop artist Nicki Minaj coming in fourth. "Teenage Dream" singer Katy Perry was the seventh fastest rising search.
The rest of the Google top 10 were websites. Gaming site Friv was fifth and Myxer, which features ring tones and wallpaper, placed sixth. Coming in after Perry were Twitter, multiplayer online gaming site Gamezer and Facebook.
Over on Yahoo, people were looking news on the BP oil spill. The Gulf of Mexico disaster was the most used subject in 2010 on the search engine. The 2010 FIFA World Cup, won by Spain, came in second. After that, Yahoo's list is full of mostly celebrities: Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, iPhone, Megan Fox, Justin Bieber, American Idol and Britney Spears.
People also dominate Bing's top searches of 2010. Kardashian, a reality show star, was the most popular search. She had 20 per cent more searches than runner-up Sandra Bullock. The Academy Award-winning actress of "The Blind Side" went through a very public divorce in 2010.
The rest of Bing's top 10 included Tiger Woods, Lady Gaga, Barack Obama, hairstyles, Kate Gosselin, Wal-Mart, Justin Bieber and free.
