The City of Nanaimo had a "qaking" problem recently that it just could not duck.
The city, which is located on ParetoLogic's base of Vancouver Island, Canada, had its municipal systems infected with a rare strain of the qakbot computer virus. This caused it to shut down its computer network in late March and clean about 440 workstations. While city officials said it is unknown how the computers became infected with the rapidly spreading virus, they did say they were confident that no personal information from residents was tracked by it.
When it comes to protecting your home computer, you should consider ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS. ParetoLogic's Spyware Analysis Team (SWAT) members are experts in their field and work hard to find emerging threats, whether they attack via emails or online downloads. Their hard works results in frequent database updates to ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS, which keeps you protected.
This advanced security software also employs heuristic scanning. ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS looks at a file to see if it demonstrates the behaviour of malware. This way you are protected against new threats that have not been identified yet.
ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS goes even further, and stops you from being infected in the first place. To do this, it blocks known malicious websites. ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS also includes Active Protection. Thwarting drive-by downloads, this feature blocks files that attempt to get onto your computer without your knowledge.
Another great aspect of ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS is that it protects you without making your PC sluggish. The latest version is 60 per cent more efficient in resource use than its predecessor. As well, ParetoLogic Anti-Virus PLUS lets you adjust the protection level to suit what you are doing. For example, in Game Mode, you will not be bothered by notices or slowed down while gaming or doing other resource intensive tasks.

Be wary of responding to emailed requests for charity donations. If you wish to make a donation, contact the charity directly or go to its official website. Cybercriminals have been known to put false links in donation solicitation emails that lead you to pages that appear legitimate, but are not.
Q. I have heard about people receiving unwanted "cold calls" from software companies. Does ParetoLogic do this?
Signed: "Phone Concerned"
A. Dear Phone Concerned
No! ParetoLogic does not practice cold calling. The only time we will contact you by phone is if you have requested a phone call through our Support Team.
Unfortunately, there have been reports of customers receiving calls out of the blue from someone claiming to represent ParetoLogic, Microsoft and other reputable software companies. The caller tells the customer that they have been infected, asks to connect remotely to their machine and requests a credit card number for payment for fixing the problem.
This is all a scam! The criminals are using social engineering tricks to get you to part with your financial information. ParetoLogic does not call you without prior contact.
If you receive a call of this nature, please do not be fooled. As well, we encourage you to report it to:

James Turner bravely stood still as a pie topped heavily with whipped cream smashed into his face.
The ParetoLogic technical support manager knew that once he got the whipped cream out of his locks, getting pied would be worth it. He, along with two other managers and a co-founder, took pies to the face in the first big event in ParetoLogic's fundraising efforts for Power to Be. To avoid getting pied, Elton Pereira, ParetoLogic's CEO, president and co-founder, jumped into the cold water at Victoria's Selkirk Waterfront.
"While I would have much rather it had been someone else looking like they had been part of a Three Stooges skit, it felt good to play a small part in raising money for this worthwhile cause," Turner said. "Power to Be does great things for people who have often been through a lot."
Twitter has found its way into the daily routine of Olympic champion
The 2000 Olympic triathlon gold medalist, who tweets @simonwhitfield, generally comes home from a swim and logs on. He reads through various tweets and often finds about a half dozen links from people he trusts. Whitfield, who is based in Victoria, where ParetoLogic (@paretologic/team-paretologic) is headquartered, opens the links in new tabs and reads them throughout the day.
"I find Twitter very interesting," the 2008 Olympic silver medalist told the ParetoLogic newsletter. "It's a great way to interact with friends, read news and story recommendations and interact with my peers in the triathlon community."
Of Whitfield's 5,669 followers, as of April 7, many are fans. Twitter has become a popular way to keep tabs on athletes. In a September, 2010, Burst Media reported that more than a third of sports fans between 18 and 34 follow athletes online. As of April 7, basketball player Shaquille O'Neal (@the_real_shaq) of the Boston Celtics was the most popular athletic tweeter with 3.68 million followers, according to tweeting-athletes.com. Coming in second was Real Madrid soccer star Kaka (3.2m, @kaka) with seven-time Tour de France champ Lance Armstrong (2.7m, @lancearmstrong), skateboarder Tony Hawk (2.3m, @tonyhawk) and Real Madrid standout Cristiano Ronaldo (2.2m, @ Cristiano) rounding out the top five. In sixth place is four-time Wimbledon champ Serena Williams, who has the most followers (2m, @serenawilliams) of any female athlete.
When people want to know what is going on in the world, they are turning more and more to their phones, tablets and computer screens, according to a recent report.
The Project for Excellence in Journalism's eighth annual State of News Media study stated online news consumption in 2010 increased 17 per cent from the year before. The percentage of people who got their news online at least three times a week surpassed newspapers for the first time ever. Local TV newscasts were still the most popular way to be informed, according to the report. However, local newscasts, network and cable TV news, newspapers, radio and magazines have all lost audiences in the past year, the report stated.
In some ways, this is not surprising news. In 2009, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper converted to an all online news outlet. That same year, Victoria Times-Colonist, the daily newspaper in the city ParetoLogic is headquartered, stopped publishing a Monday edition and increased its online coverage.
These online news outlets are not just accessed by home PCs. More readers are using smart phones and tablets such as the iPad. In January, seven per cent of Americans owned a tablet, which was twice as much as only three months earlier.
